NEEC says that the designed program will assist farmers to create employment in the whole agriculture value chain.
NEEC Ag. Director for Local Content, Esther Mmbaga told the media during a roundtable discussion on local content development in agriculture and mining in the country.
“We all know that the agriculture sector in Tanzania is the mainstay of the economy,” he said, noting that the council has given the agriculture sector high priority so as to increase economic growth.
In the financial year 2016/17 the council concentrated on carrying out local content situational analysis in the mining, gas, agriculture, construction and manufacturing sectors.
NEEC researchers found out that such sectors if prioritized have high potential in existing and upcoming investments to move the economy forward.
“The situational analysis in the mining and gas sectors has already been completed and what remains is agriculture, plus construction and manufacturing sectors. These are expected to be finalized by December,” the analyst noted.
The local content director said capacity building programs have already been carried out by various stakeholders and supporting organizations aimed at raising awareness on the concept of local content.
Existing agricultural policies revolve around the goals of developing an efficient, competitive and profitable agricultural industry that contributes to improvement of livelihoods of Tanzanians and attainment of broad based economic growth and poverty alleviation, she added.
