Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander (RPC), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Wilbroad Mutafungwa said the police arrested Emmanuel Lameck (32) and Said Salim (26) on Tuesday while trafficking a total of 61 kilogrammes of khat on a Scania lorry with registration number T.645 ABJ on the way from Moshi to Tanga.
“The driver of the lorry and his assistant were tracking the narcotics in parcels hidden in the cabin of their lorry owned by the Five Star Hardware that was going to Tanga to carry cement,” the RPC said.
Earlier on February 13, the Police in Kilimanjaro had also arrested Issa Waziri (32), a resident of Hedaru village in Same for trafficking 10 kilogrammes of khat.
Waziri was caught in Moshi with khat packed in a bag when he was about to board a Fusso lorry to Dar es Salaam.
According to RPC Mutafungwa, there are more than 836 producers of khat in Same Disatrict alone though some of the illicit drugs were smuggled from Kenya.
Meanwhile, the police in the region also seized 680 cartons of the banned hard drink sachets worth Sh60.8m from a warehouse in Bomang’ombe township in Hai district.
