National amateur golf team eager to excel in Africa Zone, championship

NATIONAL amateur golf team will seek to make the most of the home course and excel in the Africa Zone V championship slated for August 22-26 in Dar es Salaam.

Six countries, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi and hosts Tanzania, will feature in the five-day tournament which is expected to take place at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) course.

National amateur golf team’s coach, Hassan Kadio, revealed the squad’s opportunity to play on the home course gives it a slight advantage over the opponents and the former will make the most of its familiarity with the course.

“Almost half of the team’s players have been playing on the DGC course regularly and they are, therefore, familiar with it. The rest of the squad’s players, who are from outside Dar es Salaam, will hopefully get used to play on the course during the preparations for the event,” Kadio said.

Kadio (pictured) revealed 10 players have been selected for the final squad which will battle it out in the continental event. The players are skipper Victor Joseph, assistant skipper Isaac Wanyeche, Amani Said, Prosper Emmanuel, Richard Mtweve, Abbas Adam, Jumanne Mbunda, Seif Mcharo, Praveen Singh and Jay Nathwani.

Singh and Nathwani, as disclosed by Kadio, are currently training in South Africa and will join the rest of the national team at the weekend.

The team, he said, started camp in the city on Tuesday for final preparations for the tournament.

The players making the final squad were selected from a pool of 21 players who participated in a qualifying event which was held at the DGC course last weekend.

The 21 players had excelled in the first qualifying event that took place at the Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) course a few weeks back.
