Legendary professional boxers Joseph Marwa

Legendary professional boxers Joseph Marwa ‘smart boy’ and Rashid Matumla ‘snake man’ mark the New Year celebration in a ten-round non-title bout at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam today.

The boxers, who are separated by just a kilograme in terms of weight, take to the boxing ring with fans uncertain who might emerge victorious.

Marwa weighted 87 kilogramme one more than his opponent Matumla.

Unlike other boxing shows, the Matumla-Marwa fight will be held in a broad daylight with starting time being set at 16:00 hours.

Not easy to gauge who is stronger between the two as both had a low profile season though they had prepared for the showdown.

A huge turn up is expected to flock the Uhuru Stadium this afternoon as each of the boxer represents a section of the soccer rivals Simba and Yanga behind them.

The bout’s promoter Ramadhan Uhadi said boxing fans would be treated to a thrilling show as they mark New Year celebrations.

Marwa defeated Matumla during their meeting in 1994 before Matumla planned to avenge the defeat a year later.

Former WBC world champion Matumla cruised into victory over Marwa when each of the boxers was at his peak in 1995.

“It will be an historic fight basing on the fact that the boxing duo has won accolades, both inside and outside the borders,” said promoter Uhadi.

Both boxers claimed to win the bout eagerly expected by majority of fans in Dar es Salaam.

Flamboyant Matumla said he has no trouble to dispatch his opponent in today’s clash.

Likewise, Marwa said fans should turn up to what would happen on the ring while limiting himself to blow heavy trumpet.

Matumla promised to send Marwa into boxing retirement for what he has planned during the show.

The main card bout will be preceded by other ten supporting bouts; Chiwa Hussein vs Sweet Kalulu, Omary Ramadhan vs Fred Sayuni and Mbaruk Kheri vs Omary Ndumu.

Others are between Lusekelu Daud vs Omary Van Dame, Fadhili Majia vs one Best, Charles Mashal vs Hussein Mbonde, Mussa Hassan vs one Mbuchi and Rajabu Ngemba vs Hassan Zungu.

The entrance fee will be 3,000/- for the green stand, 5,000/- popular and 10,000/- for the VIPs.
