Political Parties Registrar John Tendwa (L) presents a certificate for temporary registration of Alliance for Democratic Change to the interim national leader, Said Miraji Abdallah at the registrar`s offices.

Alliance for Democratic Change (ADC), a political party formed by former Civil United Front (CUF) members believed to be allied with embattled Wawi legislator Hamad Rashid, has been granted temporary registration.

Similarly, the party was given 180 days to finalize its requirements for it to get full registration.

According to Political Parties Registrar John Tendwa, who granted the registration in Dar es Salaam yesterday, ADC will be required to get 200 members in eight regions on the Mainland and two regions (one in Pemba and another in Unguja) from Zanzibar.

“ADC brought their documents for the party’s registration in February and within a month we’re finalised our examination. That’s why today (yesterday) we’re granting it temporary registration,” he said. He said the registration gives it equal rights as those enjoyed by other political parties in the country save for participation in elections until it acquires full registration.

He said within the 180 days that the ADC has been given it will need to ensure it acquires members as directed, ensure the party is established in both the mainland and the isles, possesses a clearly defined policy that is not segregative. The registrar said its office was located in 6 administrative regions in the country, including Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Arusha, Mbeya, Dodoma and Zanzibar, and that the evaluation will be effectively conducted to establish the existence of the party’s members in each region.

However, he warned, if the party fails to get the needed number within the indicated timeframe it would be permitted to ask for an additional period of not more than three months to accomplish the exercise.

Earlier, the registrar had reservations about the party's proposed flag, saying it resembled the Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) one, but said he would wait for any comments from Chadema on the matter.

For his part, ADC temporary chairman Said Abdullah assured the registrar that the party will fulfill the requirements for it to get full registration.
