Tanesco has allocated more than 90bn/- to implement rehabilitate power transmission systems in Dar es Salaam before the end of this year, the National Assembly was told yesterday.

Stephen Masele the deputy minister for Energy and Minerals said the funds for the project to address power cuts in the region were provided by development partners.

He was responding to a basic question from special seats MP Mariam Kisangi (CCM) who wanted the government to explain efforts made to address power rationing in Dar es Salaam and rising demand due to population increase in the region. The deputy minister said the government through Tanesco planned to repair, improve and construct power transmission and circulation systems in the region.

Masele named the funding partners as Finland which has allocated Euro 26.5million to support implementation of the project at the City Centre, Sokoine and Kariakoo and the African Development Bank (AFDB) which has given USD 7.6 million to renovate power cooling stations at Sokoine and Ilala. The deputy minister named another projects as the USD 15.6m Tanzania Energy Development and Access Project (TEDAP) funded by the World Bank. Masele said 10 new transformers will be installed at Chang’ombe and Kariakoo and 6 others in the City Centre, Factory Zone I&II, Mburahati, Mikocheni and Oysterbay.

“The government has allocated USD 0.583 million to facilitate implementation of the projects before the end of 2012,” he claimed.
