The Tanzania Red Cross Society (TRCS) has called upon the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to instruct all government hospitals to stop using the Society’s official emblem.

TRCS acting chairman Dr Zainab Gama said this yesterday in Dar es Salaam, arguing that the emblem is special for use during humanitarian campaigns and crisis, such as assisting people at war, flooding and other related events.

She explained that, accordingly to the Geneva Convection, which the country has ratified, TRCS services were the only ones deserving the emblem and that it was incorrect for other institutions, including public health facilities, to use it without the permission of the Red Cross.

“We call upon the Ministry, whose hospitals’ ambulances use a Red Cross emblem without knowing that they contravene the law,” she stressed.

Dr Gama also informed that the emblem was normally applied in humanitarian services like first aid or disaster preparedness, response trainings, community sensitization, disaster management and risk reduction.

TRCS is a Voluntary and independent humanitarian organisation established in Tanzania by an Act of Parliament in 1962 and is mandated to play specific voluntary humanitarian roles, both during disasters or emergencies and in peaceful time. TRCS is operational countrywide.
