At least 11 people died instantly and eight were seriously injured in a road accident at a spot between Chibingio and Nyemigota villages in Geita Region yesterday.

The incident involved two passenger vehicles moving from Geita town to Katoro – a Toyota Corolla with registration number T344 BKE and another with number T 813 AZE.

Eyewitnesses gave the cause of the accident as speeding, saying one of the vehicles was making an attempt to overtake the other.

They said both drivers failed to control their vehicles, which then veered off the road and overturned.

Geita acting Regional Police Commander Paul Magalula confirmed the incident, noting that one of the drivers was among the dead.

He said eight passengers sustained serious injuries and were taken to Bugando referral hospital in Mwanza, adding that eight bodies had already been identified and that police investigations had begun.
