Cecafa hails lucky Simba

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Association, CECAFA has congratulated Simba for successful achievement to win a last 16 berth of the CAF’s Confederation Cup last Friday.

Cecafa’s secretary general Nicholas Musonye said through a telephone call that Simba have shown that they are a force to reckon with after struggling to oust Es Setif during a return leg tie played at the hosts venue in Algeria last Friday.

Simba progressed into the last 16 of the competition on the basis of a bonus goal scored on away soil after the teams tied at 3-3 goals stalemate.

Simba who won at home a forting ago by 2-0 goals were beaten 3-1 in the return leg to ease through. Emmanuel Okwi scored the all important bonus goal deep into stoppage time to give Simba a lifeline while sending shockwaves to hosts Setif.

Musonye said Simba travelled to Algiers as a strong team to win the contest and bring honour to the region in terms of football prowess.

The Mainland pace makers who finished the league as runners up in the previous season, Simba are expected top arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport early this morning.

The team’s contingent was reported to have arrived in Cairo by yesterday afternoon before boarding a flight home during midnight.

Simba cruised to the next stage of the league despite a 3-1 drubbing by their hosts Es Setif during the return leg played on Friday night.

Members of the samba team are to receive tumultuous welcome as confirmed by the club’s secretary general Evodia Mtawali yesterday.

Mtawali said the arm reception is reserved to the team as morale booster for the achievement in international soccer.

Mtawali said players of the team are supposed to play down complacency as they still have a huge workload ahead.

Simba host Ruvu shooting in their 23rd match of the Mainland premiership at the national Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

"We need the team to perform well both in the domestic league as well as the Confederation Cup to realize our double dreams of winning the premiership title and play the Group stage of CAF tourney”, said Mtawali.

Besides Cecafa, the Tanzania Sports Writers Association, (TASWA) has also sent congratulatory message to Simba for making progress in the Confederation Cup.

TASWA’s secretary general Amir Mhando said his body wishes the team the best of luck in the CAF league.

Simba are expected to play the last 16 matches against the winner between Mozambique’s Ferroviario and Sudanese Al Ahly Shandy whose match was underway yesterday evening.

Before eliminating Es Setif, samba dumped Kiyvu Sport of Rwanda by 3-2 goals.
