CivicUnited Front (CUF) national chairman Prof Ibrahim Lipumba has called for deletion of oil and gas from the list of union matters “to address the problem of abject poverty” among Zanzibaris.
Addressing a public rally at Kibanda Maiti grounds in Zanzibar yesterday, he said that the only way to graduate the Isles people from poverty is giving them total control of their oil and gas.
Prof Lipumba said that he had been informed on the presence of a US-based company, which is currently prospecting for gas in Zanzibar.
He said in Tanzania mainland people are poor despite presence of abundant gas reserves.
According to him, Zanzibar has a lot of gas reserves which once extracted could possibly raise citizens’ incomes to USD 83O per year.
“You should demand for a new constitution that will ensure that such natural resources remain in the hands of Zanzibar residents,” he said.
He said the amount of money to be paid by the government would help them take their children to better schools and provide them with necessary learning tools.
Meanwhile, CUF secretary-general Seif Sharrif Hamad assured party followers that CUF is still strong in both sides of the union. “We are still strong,” he said.
