Athletics Tanzania is urgently looking for fund to send a team to African Junior Championships that get underway in Botswana next month.

AT’s secretary general Suleiman Nyambui said his body has dry coffers as it also looks for funds to host an international event to be held in Dar es Salaam next month.

This is a second time for the athletics body after failing to secure funds to send the national team to the just ended African cross country championship in South Africa.

The youth championships will be held on May 5 in Gaborone and qualifiers of the event would feature for the biennial World Youth Athletic Championships to be held in South Korea on August 27 through September.

Nyambui said the consequences of failing to send a team in Gaborone would be an automatic sidelining from the world championships in Korea.

However, Nyambui declined to unveil the actual budget proposals for the Gaborone trip.

Each country is supposed to send a gender balanced team of two athletes.

“We are at a very tight corner, we want money to host the International Athletic Championships in Dar es Salaam at the same time we are supposed to send junior athletics to Botswana,” said Nyambui.

Frequent failures of domestic athletes in high profile events such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games stand as a reason behind sponsorship shun.
