East African Community (EAC) secretary-general Dr Richard Sezibera

East African Community (EAC) secretary-general Dr Richard Sezibera has hailed the United Nations Programme on HIV/Aids (Unaids) for combating the spread of HIV/Aids in the region.

Speaking to United Nations Programme on HIV/Aids (Unaids) Deputy Executive Director Paul De Lay, who visited the EAC headquarters recently, he said Unaids had been doing a lot in combating HIV/Aids in East Africa.

Dr Sezibera promised to collaborate with Unaids in achieving targets for universal access to HIV/Aids prevention, treatment and care.

“EAC is ready to work with Unaids to achieve targets for universal access to HIV/Aids prevention, treatment, care and support and reverse the spread of HIV/Aids and contribute towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals,” he said.

According to him, the EAC regional response to HIV/Aids is being guided by the EAC regional multi-sectoral HIV/Aids Strategic Plan (2008-2013), which is managed by the EAC Secretariat but implemented through the National Aids Control Councils (NACs), National Aids and STI Control Programmes (NASCOP) and Ministries of Health in the Partner States.

He further noted that the goal of the EAC HIV/Aids programme was to reduce the incidence of HIV/Aids infection in the region in order to achieve sustainable socio-economic development.

Dr Sezibera welcomed Unaids to work closely with the EAC in combating the spread of HIV/Aids in the region.

For his part, the Unaids deputy director, who was accompanied by the Unaids representative to the African Union and UNECA, Rosemary Museminali, affirmed that in leveraging the HIV/Aids response, Unaids was working to promote the rights of all people for global health and development.
