Members of Parliament have formed a group to financially help the national women football team (Twiga Stars) qualify for the Africa Women Championship (AWC) finals which will be held in Equatorial Guinea later this year.

Speaking with a radio station in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Special Seat Parliamentarian (CCM), Vick Kamata, said the group is known as ‘Friends of Twiga Stars’ and was formed because the women’s team needs support of all Tanzanians and well wishers to qualify for the coveted women soccer finals.

Kamata said the group of ‘Friends of Twiga Stars’ is made up of female and male parliamentarians but she could not name other members of the group and amount of money they plan to raise to help the team.

She said Twiga Stars need support so that they could qualify for the AWC finals for the second time in a row.

Twiga Stars, who are on fourth position on the latest edition of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) women’s soccer rankings, were undergoing residential training camp at the Ruvu National Service military base, Coast region

“We, as parliamentarians, thought it wise to help our team qualify for AWC finals. We believe that the success of the team can help to create jobs for our girls and also promote our country to the outside world,” she said.

Twiga Stars need more than 75m/- to prepare for the second leg which will be held at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
