The Parliamentary Committee on Infrastructure has resolved to discuss SIM card registration in Dodoma this week after failing to do the same in Dar es Salaam last week on the ground that mobile phone service operators did not know the exact numbers of their registered customers.
Speaking recently, committee chairman Peter Serukamba said: “We wanted to discuss the SIM registration issue and its challenges but we could not do so, until next week (this week) in Dododma.”
He said the committee wanted to assure itself of the number of clients who had already registered and those who were yet to do so in order to know the number of customers each mobile phone services, operator had.
Mobile Operators Association of Tanzania (Moat) presented to the committee on Friday a report alleging that the registration exercise was successful by 90 per cent.
Moat told the committee about the number of customers who had been registered but could not say the actual number of their customers who had not done so.
The operators complained before the committee that they were facing challenges in obtaining evidence on the correctness of the information provided to them by the customers.
“This could have worked well if customers would have had national identity cards. The information we are given is not easy to ascertain,” a Moat official said.
The committee advised the registration to be electronic and partially blocked until a customer reported to a customer care centre because blocking SIM cards could lead to unemployment and poor marketing if the cards.
Urambo West lawmaker Prof Juma Athuman Kapuya (CCM) suggested that the registration of SIM cards should continue.
Earlier, the committee chairman commended the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority Company (TCRA) for its good work.
Mandatory registration of SIM cards was introduced on July 1, 2009 to protect customers from misusing and abusing communication services.
