Zanzibar President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein has said the government of national unit (GNU) has succeeded in sustaining peace and tranquility since its formation in November 2010.

Addressing a public rally after laying the foundation stone at the Bopwe East branch, in Pemba Islana where he pledged to contribute 5m/- out of the 8.7m/- needed to complete the branch, said the GNU has set a precedent for other nations to follow.

He said the cabinet has been working in unity putting national interests at fore. "My ministers and I work together; this is in spite the fact that it is formed by members from CCM and CUF, what matters to us is national interests in serving the people," said Dr Shein.

He said under the GNU, he will continue leading the country respecting the constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania and that of Zanzibar. "We shouldn’t mix party politics with government affairs,” stressed Dr Shein.

He said that the GNU has provided to be a role model for other nations to follow, as many ambassadors; including representatives of UN organisations have been flocking to Zanzibar to learn how it worked.

"The GNU is here to serve the people, the goal being to see that their lives improve. I serve for no other purpose than the wellbeing of the people," stressed Dr Shein.

The GNU was formed by CCM, which won many seats in the presidential elections in 2010 and CUF, which by far scooped more seats compared to other opposition parties.
