Zanzibar karate team has confirmed to compete at this year’s edition of the East African championship to be held in Kampala from April 30.
The chairman of the Zanzibar Karate Association (ZASHOKA), Abdullah Hussein, said the team is expected to travel to Kampala two days ahead of the event.
Players lined up for the Kampala trip are Sempai Ali Hamad Ali, Sempai Amrani Habib and Sensei Dula who have attained international standard for the game.
The event, which would last for five days in Kampala, would involve kata, komite and tayakli karate patterns.
All players earmarked for the trip are attending training sessions here.
However, the tourney will be preceded by a special training for the karate before seating for an examination leading to attain a diploma in the game.
Hussein said it is very imperative for the Zanzibar karate players to attend the seminar so as to promote the game in the Isles.
Zanzibar karate team scooped medals during a similar championship hosted by Mainland Tanzania last year.
Zanzibar is a force to reckon with in karate among the East African countries owing to good and competent players in the field.
However, the karate team is still looking for funds to meet travelling and upkeep costs while in Kampala during the show.
Title defence, tourism publicity and respect for the nation are behind the mission for the karate players to compete in Kampala.
The ‘Nile Shotokan Uganda’ are organizers of the competition.
