European Union (EU) Ambassador to Tanzania Filiberto Sebregondi on Wednesday said prospects in Tanzania's gas sector offered a unique opportunity for accelerated development that could bring about major benefits to the people of Tanzania.
He said experience elsewhere had shown that this prospect came with many challenges, insisting that the EU would work in innovative ways to ensure Tanzanians benefited from the resource.
He said this when the EU delegation to Tanzania and Norway visited Mtwara region in Southern Tanzania whereas they held discussions with interlocutors on developments in the region and activities and prospects in the gas sector.
“EU and other partners will work with the government to reduce the risks associated with this development and realise the potential for Tanzania for accelerated economic growth and poverty reduction,” said Sebregondi
The ambassadors visited the Port of Mtwara, the Maurel and Prom gas processing facilities and the Wentworth power station. They also visited an offshore gas platform. Visitors included diplomats from the EU delegation to Tanzania, British High Commission and embassies of Belgium, Finland, Germany, Spain and Sweden.
