A total of 170 students yesterday graduated with degrees and diplomas at Dar es Salaam-based Saint Joseph College of Engineering and Technology, with the institution’s patron urging the grandaunds to be innovative to win the competitive market.

Archbishop of Songea Norbrt Mtega, speaking during the college’s fourth graduation ceremony, said today people don’t employ their staff simply by looking at certificates; rather they look at quality and discipline.

The Saint Joseph College of Engineering and Technology was started in 2004 as a computer centre. It has turned into a big university campus of what is today St. Joseph University in Tanzania (SJUIT).

Currently 1,732 students are doing degrees in engineering programme of whom 1, 517 are male and 215 are female.

Archbishop of Songea Norbert Mtega warned the grandaunds to avoid placing priority on their professions at the expense of humanity. “You should remember that your profession is not the absolute venue or authority…you should not conduct things which will lead people to suffer.

“It is wrong to value our professions and disvalue the people, we should consider humanity when we are demanding our rights.” he stated.

SJUIT is being run under the auspices of Society of Daughters Mary Immaculate (DMI) founded in India in 1984 to render service to the most downtrodden, says a statement issued by the university.

The Founder and Chancellor of Saint Joseph Collage of Engineering Dr Arul Raj asked the government to offer them more land in the neighbourhood of the university.

St Joseph University in Tanzania has four other campuses, two in Mbeya, one in Songea and another at Makambako.

Meanwhile, the minister of works John Magufuli said the grandaunds should prepare themselves to be problem solvers and not complainers. They should fulfill their responsibility professionally.

He urged them to observe the law, discipline and integrity and avoid unnecessary conflict and they should not be afraid to be blamed.

He also advised people who have encroached on road reserves to relocate voluntarily because their structures would be demolished if they delayed to do so.

Magufuli said there are plans to build roads for express buses along Morogoro road and for that reason there will be a lot of road construction works.
