Tobacco farmers tipped off on how to sell the produce and procure loans

3rd May 2012

Tobbaco farmers in Manyoni District, Singida Region have been urged to order fertilisers through their Central Zone Tobacco Growers Cooperative Union 1995 Ltd (CETCU) which would enable them to get payment instantly.

This was said here recently by CRDB bank credit officer Emmanuel Kafui when speaking at the annual general meeting of tobacco farmers at Makale ward in the district.

He said the bank was not be ready to pay farming input arrears owed to farmers who will order fertilisers out of their union. He claimed that there are some farmers who took loans from financial institutions and were instead selling their crops to other companies or middlemen.

He explained that such acts have contributed to the increased number of loan defaulters since the farmers do not repay their loans to the loan givers.

Kafui said to address the situation, from now on, the bank will make close follow ups to all loans applicants and ensure that they repay the money.

However he said, there are some unfaithful farmers who took agricultural loans from the banks and used the money contrary to intended activities.

He also urged farmers to refrain from selling fertilisers which they took as loans from tobacco companies.

On long term loans, he said the bank will continue to dish out long term loans after looking at productivity and would not issue cash loans to the applicant, would let the borrowers get inputs from the supplier.

He blamed the management of CETCU for the delays in forwarding farmer’s loan applications to the bank.
