Rotary club of Dar es Salaam launches road safety campaign

In a move to lower the rate of road accidents the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam in association with the police force have been spearheading a campaign initiative against driving while phoning and texting.

The campaign with the theme slogan ‘Driving + Phone = Death’ is aimed at sensitising drivers not to use their mobile phones while driving.

The president of Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam, Sharmila Bhatt, said the main aim of the campaign is to create awareness against what is slowly becoming a chronic problem and a danger to lives of motorists countrywide.

It is known that for a driver talking on a mobile phone is four times more likely to get into an accident, she said, adding that if one were to embark on text while driving he is eight times more likely to get into an accident.

“Phoning or texting while driving is not really worth a life,” she stressed.

“The campaign is being supported by corporate organisations and the police force - who believe that this sensitisation, will assist in our roads being safe,” Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Mpinga said. He added: “Phoning and texting have been causing so many accidents in our country and while the legislation is being worked on, our utmost concern currently to have citizens driving safely. Hence we are joining hands with Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam in this endeavour.”

“When a citizen is educated on the matter of safety one generally takes caution or heeds rather than wait for legislation to be enforced,” he said.

Commissioner Mpinga urged more companies and institutions to come to the support of the police force in its efforts to make the country’s roads safe for all users.

Rotary International is the world's first service club organisation, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide.

Its members are business leaders who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto “Service Above Self”.

The campaign is also supported by Airtel Tanzania Limited, Magic FM, Boss Automation Limited, Clouds FM and Syscorp Media.
