Mobile phone provider Tigo has donated 25 wheelchairs to the Association of Entrepreneurs living with Disabilities.

The handover ceremony was held at the weekend at the Buguruni School for the Deaf in Dar es Salaam, and the wheelchairs were presented by Tigo promotions and events coordinator Edward Shila.

Esther Mkwizu, the Executive Secretary of Tanzania Private Sector Foundation received the items on behalf of the association.

“We are delighted to be able to assist this group of people living with disabilities who will now be mobile and able to go about their entrepreneurial activities with more ease,” he said.

He added: “We are also delighted to be able to introduce them to the vast business opportunities made possible through being an agent of Tigo Rusha and Tigo Pesa.”

“We hope that our support contributes to the improvement of their lives through improving their income generating capabilities,” he said.

Tigo has also committed to an entrepreneurial training programme for Tigo services, Tigo Rusha and Tigo Pesa for the participating members of the association, he added.

The partnership is part of an entrepreneurship project whereby members of the association will receive handsets, Tigo sim cards, and training, he said.

This partnership plans to provide assistance to 25 additional members in Arusha and Dodoma, he added.

“People living with disabilities experience economic hardships much more than other sectors of society,” Mkwizu said.

“We believe that empowering the physically challenged will not only bring them into mainstream activities, but also assist them in meaningful income generating schemes, after all disability is not inability,” she said.

Other corporate organisations were also challenged to join the initiative and assist with access to support facilities that will aid mobility for those living with disabilities.
