For the first time in history, the next year’s edition of the Mapinduzi Cup would include netball championship as well.
Zanzibar’s second Vice-President Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi has come into agreement with a proposal lodged by the netball association here, CHANEZA, to inaugurate the netball contest for national teams and not clubs.
The second vice-president endorsed the proposal during a launch of the committee that would organize the Mapinduzi Cup last week.
Idd said the Government has agreed to invite national netball teams from Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Tanzania Mainland to compete in the event.
The Mapinduzi Cup has for years been exclusively involving soccer teams from Mainland and Zanzibar only.
“The Government has been excited and joins hands with CHANEZA to include netball in the tourney and we are gearing up to give you the needed support,” said the Ambassador Seif.
The Government official said plans are underway to stage the event in Pemba but a confirmation is to follow.
Mohammed Raza, who is the chairman of the preparations committee, said the event’s estimated budget has been projected to hit 100 million shillings.
He said the sum is expected to be generated from donations and sponsorship out of various corporate bodies and individuals throughout Zanzibar and Pemba.
Raza insisted that the expected money would be utilized prudently for the intended expenditures.
“We have a committee made up of people with high degree integrity and would possibly work hard and diligently,” said Raza.
Zanzibar’s minister for Information, Culture, Tourism and Sports Abdillah Hassan Jihad said the Mapinduzi Cup is being staged with a view of strengthening cooperation, maintain health of the players as well as anniversary of 48 years of the Island’s revolution.
The minister said he believes the committee has members who are committed and hard working to facilitate smooth running of the tournament.
Members of the committee include vice chairperson Sherry Khamis, Amani Ibrahim Makungu (treasurer) and Ali Mwinyikai (member).
Other members are Issa Mlingoti, Abubakar Bakhressa, Toufik Salum, Ali-Hariri Miza and Farouk Karim the coordinator.
Simba are holders of the Mapinduzi Cup.
