Toto devastate holders Yanga

16th April 2012
Young Africans

For the first time since wining the Mainland premiership berth, Toto Africa overwhelmed ‘blood’ brothers Young Africans by 3-2 goals in their return leg match played at the CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza yesterday.

The home side kicked off the game in aggressive mood and had already scored three goals in the first 43 minutes before Hamis Kiiza pulled one back for the visitors.

Musa Said opened the score sheet for the home side after 18 minutes with a powerful volley, making use of Kamna Salum pass.

It took just six minutes later when team mate Idd Moby was on target to shock again the visitors while sending wild celebrations into the stands across the vast stadium in the lake zone.

Yanga’s Ugandan striker who was recruited during the reign of Sam Timbe as a coach of the title holders last year, pulled one back two minutes to time.

The lakeside boys enjoyed a two goal cushion up to the half time. Toto looked as different outfit yesterday as they played enterprising game while tormenting Yanga defence almost at will.

The Mwanza team which struggled to survive the premiership berth the season before the last with a 6-0 drubbing of Yanga, looked determined to win the match.

The score line is s reverse of last season’s when Yanga used the win as springboard to win the premiership title at the same venue.

Kiiza was again on target after 65 minutes with a spectacular back heel goal thanks to Haruna Niyonzima who supplied the pass.

Yanga used the rest of the remaining time to besiege Toto’s goal but lady luck would not smile for the title holders.

The defeat has dented Yanga’s title retention hopes as they trail ten points adrift of pace makers Simba with four matches to play.

They meet another premiership stubborn Kagera Sugar at the Kaitaba Stadium in Bukoba on Wednesday in a match they have no option except to post victory.

Yanga have a seven point gap to close on second placed Azam FC who has played one more game.

The outcome of the match in Mwanza was celebrated by fans believed to e or their archrivals Simba at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Yanga’s ceiling has now been limited to 55 points should they win all their remaining four matches including their seasonal closure derby against Simba.

Simba need to win their next match to dash Yanga’s title hopes. This is the fifth defeat of the season for the holders who have a tall order to retain the title. Other losses were by JKT Ruvu, twice to Azam FC and a three-point loss to Coastal Union for fielding suspended defender Nadir Haroub in their match against Coastal Union last month.
