Rejuvenated Arusha amateur golfer John Leonce beat Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club’s Pembe Kondo by a shot to win the Lugalo Open title that ended on Sunday.
Leonce who has shown remarkable improvement silenced his critics after two years on the sidelines to emerge victorious in the Tanzania Golf Union-sanctioned event.
Leonce carded 77, then three over par 75 on the final day to edge Kondo on countback.
This is Leonce’s second win at the same course after his Nyerere Masters victory at the same course in October.
To form Leonce is gearing up for the weekend’s Chairman’s Trophy to be staged at the Arusha Gymkhana Club course.
Second placed Kondo who lost the title by just a shot, edged Nuru Mollel and Frank Roman on count back as well.
Following the victory, Leonce is now leading the pack of amateur golfers in the TGU order of merit series with staggering 57 points.
He has opened a five-point shot over Nuru Mollel and has created a huge gap of 6.5 points over Moshi golfer Abbas Adam who used to dominate the big part of the season.
He Arusha golfer Leonce stands a chance to win the TGU golfer of the year award should he excel in the Chairman’s golf this weekend.
