The country will take part at the forthcoming Chinese traditional games taking place in China from July 28 to 30 this year, the Tanzania National Traditional Games Association (CHAMIJATA), disclosed over the week-end in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking to the media at a press briefing in Dar es Salaam, the association’s Chairman Mohamed Hussein Kazigumbe said the country would be represented by two people at the event.
He said the Chinese government sent an invitation to Tanzania in April this year and is ready to pay for the athletes’ expenses.
He could not divulge names of the athletes saying his association’s technical committee was scouting for the best athletes and would later name them.
Kazigumbe said the Chinese government saw the local athletes at the World Traditional Games which was held in Southern Korea in the 2008 and 2010 and were impressed with the performances of the local athletes.
He said the country is the only African country which has been attending the World Traditional Games because it’s the only African country which use original traditional equipments at the games, unlike other African countries who use tools which do not originated from their countries..
The CHAMIJATA chairman asked Tanzanians to appreciate their local traditional games saying the games were a sign of unity among people of various culture.
He also disclosed that his association will host the National Traditional games in August in Dar es Salaam. He said the event will go along with the association’s general elections whereby district and regional bearers will be selected.
