The Tanga regional Miners Association (Tarema) has urged the government to involve its members in solving problems facing the mining sector.
The Tarema Secretary General Salim Kiyungi, said the problem facing the mining sector in Tanzania cannot be resolved without the government involving them.
“The government failure to involve us (small scale miners) in solving problems between investors and citizens has been a major reason for ongoing crisis in mining sites in various parts of the country,” he said.
He also urged the government to empower the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) so that it can implement its activities more smoothly.
“Apart from legal empowerment, there is also the need to look for reasons which make foreign investors keep their capital abroad while performing their activities in Tanzania,” he stated.
He also urged the government to review the royalty fee paid by mining investors, saying it was too low when compared to the value of the shilling.
