The first ever track and field club has been established in Dar es Salaam and has instantly attracted over 60 members.
The club aimed at promoting athletics, is known as Dar Athletics and is under the acting chairperson of Stella Mandago.
Mandago said the club aims at introducing athletics to some Dar es Salaam residents and also encourages people to healthier lifestyle.
She said the club members believe that once a person is young and healthy his or her immunity system becomes strong to fight against diseases.
The official said the club is in the process of registering with the Athletics Tanzania (AT) and thereafter will start organising events in the city and beyond.
A look for the services of a well qualified coach to train the members is also a top priority.
The chairperson said the club is really committed to take athletics in the country to high heights by organising international and domestic competitions.
She said currently many members of the group are foreigners working in the country but it is open to any one.
She disclosed that the club members meet at Colloseum Hotel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for training while Saturdays and Sundays are earmarked for competitions and training at the Dar es Salaam Yatch Club.
Mandago said the club also organises some fun run events whose proceeds are donated to charitable organisations in the country.
“Most of members are employees, so we make use of weekend time for most of athletics activities,” she said.
According to her, the club has in the past competed at some domestic and international marathons and some members had won.
