The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has outlined promotion of industrialisation, statistics and evidence-based policy, as key areas it would support in line with priorities of the country’s national development strategy.

Unido country representative Emmanuel Kalenzi said the agency’s programme support to those areas was meant to promote national development growth and bring about positive results.

“We (Unido) have selected priorities and your work will go along these three problematic clusters,” Kalenzi said in Dar es Salaam at the weekend at a consultative meeting between the agency and its key stakeholders.

He said the support would go to policies designed to promote industrialisation, statistics and evidence-based policy making in the country.

“The clusters will also focus on promoting enterprise competitiveness to enable entrepreneurs access markets be it domestically, regionally or internationally,” the Unido country representative said.

According to Kalenzi, another cluster to be supported would be energy and environment with the aim of stimulating rural development, reducing poverty and promoting ownership of the economy.

“It is an undeniable fact that energy and environment stand a better chance to influence competitiveness,” he said, adding that the consultative meeting provided a splendid opportunity of sharing experiences on implementation of different programmes.

He said, the Unido, with its counterparts, had agreed to pool more resources towards achieving set goals in a bid to realise good results in the next financial year.

Kalenzi further said that the meeting also enabled all stakeholders to plan together, review and agree on how best they could go about implementing the programmes.

Earlier, Assistant Director of Investment and Research in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, who is charged with Industrial Development affairs, Elli Pallangyo, thanked the Unido for its support in promoting industrialisation in the country.

“Under the Unido support, we have been implementing different projects,” Pallangyo explained. “We are making headway in fulfilling our goals and in the meeting we agreed to improve our policies and improve the environment,” he added.

During the crucial consultative meeting, which attracted all Unido key stakeholders, participants agreed to meet quarterly for a similar discussion.
