Olympic-Bound trainers’ duos of Remmy Ngabo and Zachariah Gwandu have expressed their satisfaction on the standard of their athletes ahead of boarding a Heathrow destined flight next month.
The trainers have said on separate occasions that their athletes have a possibility of winning medals at the Games to break the long existed voodoo for Tanzania.
Ngabo, who trains the only boxer in the squad, Seleman Kidunda, says the athlete is responding well to trainings and might sparkle in the Games.
Olympic Games get underway on July 27 as Kidunda is lined up for welterweight category and has been attending training sessions at Filbert Bayi Secondary School in Kibaha preparing for London trip.
Ngabo said he is satisfied with the boxer’s response to his instructions at the training camp. He says the pugilist has enough fitness to face whoever comes on his way during the Games in London.
"He is in good shape and people will be surprised with his performance. I can confidently tell you that we are ready," he said.
He says it will be impossible for him to develop a possible game plan because he does not have details of Kidunda’s opponent at the Games. Instead he is just instructing him on general insight of the possible opponent at the Games.
The athletics trainer Gwandu says he is very satisfied with the progress so far shown by athletes in the camp. He claims the team is upbeat and in good shape as they respond to his instructions.
He bemoaned the absence of injured middle distance runner Zachariah Mrisho while he has been focusing to drill marathon trio of Samson Ramadhan, Msenduki Mohamed and Faustino Mussa.
The coach said the weather in Kibaha is conducive for training and free of intruders.
“The athletes are in good shape for the London Games. We are preparing well as we gear up to haul medals at the event. The athletes will do everything possible to win medals at the event, though I’m aware that 205 countries will field athletes to compete for three medals in each category,” he said.
Meanwhile, Gwandu said Tanzania’s middle distance runner Mrisho, who has been struggling to gain fitness, is expected back this evening from Nairobi where he went for medical attention.
The coach said he has been verbally informed that the athlete has improved.
However, he declined to comment on the athletes’ prospects while waiting for the medical report and Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) decision.
Coach Sheha Mohamed Ali, who trains the only swimmer in the Tanzania Olympic squad, Australia-based Magdalena Mushi, would not be reached for comment
The Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) technical director, Marcelino Ngalioma, declined to say when the swimmer will arrive in the country to join the England-bound team.
However, during previous interview TSA president Alex Mushi said the swimmer, who is in pursuit of a degree in sports medicine, is expected to join the Tanzania team on time before boarding the Heathrow flight on July 8.
The Olympics team is expected to undergo training for three weeks at Bradford University ahead of the Games.
Tanzania will battle for medals in athletics and boxing while the swimmer is ruled out for medal as she qualified on Olympic solidarity ticket.
Tanzania team has been flopping terribly at Olympics with medal hopes remaining as a nightmare despite maintaining consistency in appearances.
