Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman has underscored the need to open a High Court in Lindi region in order to facilitate southern zone residents access to justice.

He made the remarks recently during his official visit in the region.

“There is a need to establish a High Court in this region so that residents can be assisted easily once in need of our services,” he said.

Chande said apart from Mtwara there are other regions which lack such services including Kigoma region. He said Kigoma’s residents have to travel to Tabora region to get High Court services.

Chande insisted that the objective is to have a High Court in every region in order to reduce inconvenience to the people.

He however said that magistrates are responsible for ensuring that cases are completed on time to reduce congestion in prisons.

For his part, Mtwara Resident Magistrate Shaaban Lila said that his region faces acute shortage of judicial workers, especially in primary courts. He said they are expecting to get 10 magistrates from list of 300 new magistrares lined up for employment in the coming fiscal year.
