Anthony Mtaka, the Mvomero District Commissioner, has been elected to the post of Athletics Tanzania (AT) presidency at the end of the body’s general election held in Morogoro over the weekend.

Mtaka has replaced Francis John with 50 votes to 15 while Suleiman Nyambui has retained his secretary general’s post.

Elections chairman Henry Tandau said the AT posts were hotly contested and at times voters had to cast second ballots.

Mtaka, Juma Ikangaa, Francis John and Henry Nyiti contested for the presidency post and during the first round none got the required votes. The four got 36, 25, 15 and 7 votes, respectively.

Tandau said his committee had to call for a re-run between Mtaka and Ikangaa who were on top during the first ballot, when the former won by 50 votes against 29 of the later.

He said four aspirants contested for the post of secretary general including eventual winner Nyambui, John Bayo, Zainab Mbiro and John Manyama. Nyambui won 41 against 38 of his closest challenger, Bayo.

According to Tandau, William Kallaghe went unopposed on the post of vice- presidency (Administration) and also Hamad Ndee was elected as vice- president (Technical) with 65 votes against 42 of Herman Ndisa.

Ombeni Zavalla won the post of assistant secretary with 40 votes against 32 of Julius Murunya as Lucas Nkungu managed paltry three.

The general election also saw Mwinga Mwanjala, Lwiza John, Peter Mwita, Zacharia Gwandu, Meta Petro Bare, Zacharia Barie, Rehema Kilo, Robert Kalyhe, Christian Matembo and Tullo Chambo elected as members of the executive committee.

Tandau described the elections as free and fair while the new AT president promised to work extra hard to develop and promote athletics in the country.
