Morogoro -based Mtibwa Sugar are visiting Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga where they are lined up to meet hosts Mgambo JKT in their return leg match of the Mainland premiership this afternoon.
Both teams are safe from relegation worries and are assured of premiership survival.
However, the visitors have an opportunity to leapfrog both Simba and Coastal Union and stay at the third spot in the standings table should they post a victory.
With 29 points to their collection, Mtibwa might hit a 32-point mark to edge out Simba and Coastal Union and stay right behind Azam FC, one of the hottest title contenders for the closing season.
However, Mtibwa Sugar, giant killers as they are known for tormenting the league’s stalwarts Simba and Yanga, have often failed to sparkle to unfancied sides.
Not surprising, Mtibwa might struggle to beat the newly promoted side that is playing at their own backyard.
A win for the hosts would consolidate their position into safe horizon to underline their assurance as a top flight berth team for the next season.
Both Mtibwa and Mgambo have weak ceiling points that are not enough to shake off pacemakers Yanga or second placed Azam in the chase for the scudetto.
However, Mtibwa’s charge might be useful to tease holders Simba who are on the brink of surrendering the title within the next few weeks if they don’t put up brave fight.
Mgambo and Mtibwa have all played 19 matches and they wind up their 20th round today to remain with six others for seasonal closure.
Two other matches are in midweek fixture today as relegation-haunted African Lyon will be at the Azam Complex in Chamazi hosting Ruvu Shooting.
The pressure is on the Lyon side who are in urgent need to win the match so as to escape relegation at the end of the season.
Lyon have 12 points resulting from three wins and as many draws.
The third fixture for today involves a match between JKT Oljoro and Tanzania Prisons to be played at the Sheikh Mari Abeid Stadium in Arusha.
Both teams are safe from relegation and are ruled out of the premiership title for having weak ceiling points.
The visitors have slight pressure to fight for points as no body knows how the rest of the teams below Prisons would perform in an effort to disengage from the relegation shockwaves.
Prisons have created a three-point gap over the relegation borderline. Victory for Ruvu JKT and Police Morogoro in their next matches might suffocate the Mbeya side that has struggled to regain top flight status after several years on the sidelines.
Most of the matches to highlight title chase will be played during the weekend fixtures where pacemakers Yanga and Azam will be on show.
