Zanzibar Football Association is soliciting funds to help the Island soccer team meet preparatory expenses ahead of competing in their first ever ‘World Cup’ for those countries and national associations that are outside the FIFA membership brackets.
The championship will be held in Kurdistan for five days from June 4.
ZFA is targeting to collecting 39 million shillings to cater for the team’s training camp and other associated expenditures.
ZFA information officer Munir Zacharia said its high time Zanzibaris should exhibit solidarity, cooperation and devotion to their team through contributing to the fund’s pool.
He said the team is supposed to open the training camp immediately but lack of funds seems to be a stumbling block.
A special committee has been formed to solicit funds and meet the objective. The ZFA spokesman said what is required is not necessarily hard cash as foodstuffs and whichever is useful to facilitate the training camp can be accepted.
He said Zanzibar must feel honoured to have the opportunity to feature in the championship as the organizers have already committed through the supply of 25 free return flight tickets.
A build up match has been organised as Zanzibar meet Malawi at the refurbished Amaan Stadium here on Saturday 26.
The match would also serve as fund raising initiative as fans have been urged to turn up in big numbers.
“We have already secured 18 return fight tickets for players and seven other for officials”, said Zachariah.
ZFA had already selected players to join the training camp to gear up for the tourney.
