Coast Region directors punished for failure to submit reports
Two District Executive Directors (DEDs) will have their salaries for this month slashed by 15 per cent following failure to submit in time financial reports for 2010/2011 to the Local Authority Accounting Committee (LAAC).
The LAAC Vice-Chairman Iddi Azan said the two district directors, of Mafia District and Rufiji District, have been issued with warning letters for the late submission of the report to the Parliamentary Standing watchdog Committee.
For that reason, LAAC could not inspect financial year reports for the two district councils, prompting the watchdog committee to send back the local authorities with their documents.
“District councils should submit reports two weeks before the Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting but Mafia and Rufiji failed to do so, instead they submitted them on Wednesday, making us fail to scrutinize them,” said Azan.
Besides, according to him, the Mafia financial year report was controversial as the budget and expenses did not match, describing the situation as irresponsibility on the part of the council.
“This is initial punishment and we give them two weeks to complete and submit their financial year reports.
“Municipal leaders are irresponsible and at this first stage we give them two punishments and time to submit their financial year reports, failure of which means more action will be taken against them,” said Azan.
LAAC chairman Augustine Mrema (MP -TLP) stated that his committee works by ensuring that it takes action by stopping all evils done by irresponsible leaders.
Mrema said if district municipal directors and their executives won’t be careful his committee will report them as unaccountable and inefficient leaders to the Prime Minister and President for further action.
He urged district leaders to work efficiently as the MPs would always make sure they carry their responsibilities in public interest.
LAAC expects to make investigation on various development projects in districts and municipals after completing the evaluation of financial year reports.
