Tanzania national karate team emerged victorious in the just ended east African championship staged in Kampala.
The weeklong championship saw Tanzanian karate players thrashing every opponent to sin a gold medal as confirmed by Abdullah Hussein, the Zanzibar Karate Association (Zashoka) chairman.
Mikidadi Kilindo who features for the Mainland team won the individual category to claim a gold medal.
Tanzania beat Kenya and hosts Uganda to the runners-up and third place to take home silver and bronze medals, respectively.
The tournament was preceded by a training seminar for coaches and players on new tactics of the game.
The seminar was conducted by an instructor from South Africa as attendants were awarded with certificates.
Mainland karate players were Sensei Jerome and Sempai Mikidadi as two Zanzibar players were appointed as judges during a Komite karate pattern that placed Kenya as winners.
Zanzibar’s duo of Sensei Dula and Sempai Ali were appointed as judges.
Sensei Dula said the tournament was highly competitive as players from the region had slightly equal levels in terms of performance.
A tournament of similar magnitude will be staged in Nairobi later in September and Zanzibar gears up to compete.
Dula said karate stands a huge chance of flapping Zanzibar flag high at international fronts given support and improve its infrastructures.
He said the new seminar has helped karate players to make improvement while he also expressed appreciation to the national Sports Council of Zanzibar, BMTZ for the cooperation and financial assistance to take part in the Kampala tourney.
Besides winners Tanzania and hosts Uganda, other teams that took part in the tourney were Kenya and Burundi.
