Fabian Joseph clocked one hour, three minutes and 45 seconds to retain the title of a Tigo-sponsored Ngorongoro Half Marathon in Karatu, Manyara Region last week.

Joseph who is preparing for the London Olympics was followed closely by Martin Sulle who emerged second after running for 1:04.26 and third place went to Stephano Huche who was timed 1:04.30.

In the women’s category, Jacqueline Sakilu won the race after spending 1:16.01 while veteran Restituta Joseph finished second at 1:18.21. Restituta has competed without winning a medal in three Olympics, Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004). Siata Romanus emerged third at 1:20:30

This year’s race was the fifth edition and it attracted over 200 runners. The race was organized by Zara Charity who works closely with the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) to help groom local athletes into world class runners.

Tigo is the sponsor of the event as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

The marathon is also an opportunity to raise awareness about malaria and to seek engagement in fighting the devastating but preventable disease. Malaria is Africa’s number one killer accounting for up to three million deaths annually and 3,000 children deaths daily.
