Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Leonidas Gama has strongly blasted the Tanzania Athletics (AT) for dismal performance of athletes at international events.
The RC said AT has failed to plan ahead of the events culminating to the drastic downfall of the game as Tanzania has continued to be rank outsiders.
He said lack of vision and planning by AT is costing athletes as they fail to impress at international meetings.
AT should have planned to develop the game from grassroots levels particularly in rural areas.
The RC was speaking during the early preparations of the Kilimanjaro marathon in Moshi.
Gama said it’s the shame for the country when domestic athletes fail to sparkle at an international events held at our door steps.
He wondered why the foreign athletes are stealing the show at the expense of the home athletes.
According to Gama, the home athlete are not to blame for their poor show but rather AT deserves the blasts for failing to plan ahead.
“We have seen athletes from other countries performing well at this marathon in the past”, he said.
AT chairman Francis John said his association is working hard to improve the game at all levels. Currently AT has embarked on plans to develop the game at grassroots level.
AT is working at identifying young athletes from secondary schools through UMISETA and other games, so says John.
He also said AT plans to organise many international tournaments so that home athletes gain experience.
Conclusively, he said AT hopes to benefit from the marathon which has been attracting athletes from 34 countries. February 26 is the date for the event in Moshi.
