Nineteen contestants who will on May 27 vie for this year’s Miss Universe Tanzania, it was revealed in Dr es salaam yesterday.
Speaking at a press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday, all contestants vowed to clinch the glamorous title slated for today.
“All of us are winners and that’s why we have decided to compete in this contest, we appreciate for the best hospitality of the organisers for keeping us in the best place,” said a contestant in interviews.
The pageants are Nesia Karata (22)Melody Mariga (19),Salvina Kibona (19) while from Dodoma region is Sesilia Joseph Ngowa (22) and Magdalena Munisi (22), Mwanaidi Mwanga and Neema Kilango (22).
Others are Silipa Swai,Loveness Jacob (21),Noela Marunda (23) all from Mwanza while from Dar es Salaam are Yacoba Assenga (24), Nelly Kamwelu (18), Elizabeth Barden (23) and Glory John (23).
Also in the Dar es Salaam list include Neema Sulvely (19), Devotha Chaggata (21), Bahati Ernest (21), Jacklen George (23) and Linda Deus (21).
Sponsors of the contest have said they have decided to support the pageant as part of their endevours to empower the women in various aspects of development and social responsibility.
They noted that the country was yet to attain the highest development in beauty contest and therefore needed encouragement on the part of those participating in them.
Vodacom Tanzania External Relation Manager, Nector Pendaeli said his company was all out in making sure that beauty contests reach their apex by helping it morally and financially.
Nector said that Vodacom Tanzania has injected 50m/ to support the pageant that would see 19 contestants competing for the top prize.
She said that the winner of Miss Universe Tanzania 2011 will also become the Vodacom Tanzania Goodwill Ambassador by giving her social tasks like participating in various charities of Vodacom Tanzania through Vodacom Foundation.
Managing Director of Compass Communication Tanzania Limited, Maria Sarungi said that the contestants’ camp will be under three matrons namely, Hidaya Maeda, Happy Kimbe and reigning Miss Universe Tanzania, Hellen Dausen.
Miss Universe Tanzania was first held in 2007 when Tanzania was represented by Flaviana Matata who was a top 10 semi-finalist. In 2008 Tanzania was represented by Amanda Ole-Sulul while in 2009 Illuminata James was the title holder and in 2010 the crown was worn by Hellen Dausen.
Apart from Vodacom Tanzania, other sponsors of the event include Golden Tulip, Precision Air, Coca Cola, Dar Life, MH Gallery, Dodoma Hotel, Triple A, Vayle Springs, New York Film Academy and Shear Illusion among others.
