The netball association (CHANETA) plans to have a three-week training camp ahead of the coming international netball tournament to be hosted by the country in May, the body’s acting secretary general, Rose Mkisi, has said.

Mkisi said the national netball team players are undergoing intensive training at the Filbert Bayi Secondary School in Kibaha under the tutelage of veteran coach Mary Protas.

She said currently all players who were named in the provisional squad are attending training and the technical committee of the association will select 14 players for the final squad.

Mkisi said CHANETA wants to have good preparations to ensure that the International Federation for Netball Association (IFNA) sanctioned tournament is successful and also for the country to improve in the body’s world rakings.

She also thanked public institutions for starting releasing the national team players for camping.

“Many players are now turning up for the camp, and we are very thankful to the institutions and organizations for realizing the importance of sports in national development,” she said.

Last week, a hired national netball team assistant coach, Malawian Mary Waya, was not happy with the number of national team players who turned up for the residential camp in Kibaha.

CHANETA called 30 players from Zanzibar and Mainland Tanzania but by last Thursday only 13 players were already reported for the camp, the development which irked Waya and other technical members of the country’s netball governing body.

Waya said such delays were detrimental and will only deny the country much needed victory in the home soil.
