Tanzania, Lesotho in netball opener

Tanzania national netball team faces Lesotho in the opening match of the eight nation’s championship at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam this afternoon.

The netball association’s (CHANETA) acting secretary general Rose Mkisi said the draw was made by officials from all competing teams.

She said the opener will be followed by another tie between title holders Malawi against Botswana at the same venue. First Lady Salma Kikwete will be the guest of honor at the opening ceremony.

Mkisi said the host team is in good shape after more than three weeks training at Filbert Bayi Secondary School, as players have pledged a gallant fight to send the visitors home empty handed.

She said all players know the importance of the championship to them and the country.

“All the players are in good shape and they have promised to fight tooth and nail for their country to win the title”, she said.

She urged all Tanzanians to turn out at the National Stadium and support the home side.

In another development, mobile telephone service providers Vodacom yesterday donated assorted sports equipments worthy six million shillings to the national netball ahead of the championship.

Vodacom Tanzania’s external affairs manager Salum Mwaimu said his company hopes the donation would boost team morale during the championship and cruise to the title podium.

The donations include 20 pairs of sports shoes, 20 pieces of bips, two sets of jerseys and twenty tracksuits.

He pledged his company support towards the development of sports in the country and urged the players to fight tooth and nail and win the championship and improve its world ranking.

“We are very committed at developing sports in the country and its our strong belief this donation will help to boost the team’s morale in winning the title”, he said.
