Six local tennis players will take part in the coming Kenya Open Tennis Championship slated for March 12-15 at Nairobi Club.
Speaking with The Guardian on Tuesday, Hassani Kassim, who is the national tennis youth coach, said the six are expected to leave the country separately as they are self sponsored.
Kassim named the players as Waziri Rajabu, Omari Abdallah, Sefu Saleh , Rema Othman, Othman Hamis and himself.
Kassim said the tournament will see action in the men’s and women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, handicap singles, veterans’ doubles, wheelchair men and ladies.
He also said this year’s tournament will kick off with action in the junior events on March 10, with the seniors qualifying events beginning two days later.
Kassim said the tournament is being sponsored by Real Insurance and the winner of the men’s singles will pocket more than 850,000/- while the ladies winner will take home more than 750,000/-.
He called upon companies, organizations and individuals to help other tennis players who wanted to compete in the tournament but failed due to lack of money.
He said the tournament will help to promote local tennis players and the country in general.
