The government has said the decision to allow girl students who have been impregnated to go back to school after delivery is yet to be taken, though it is still under consideration.

Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children Sophia Simba told the House yesterday when reacting to a supplementary question by Susan Lyimo (Special Seats - Chadema), who wanted to know the progress of the study.

The minister said several matters emerged during the exercise, some supporting it and others rejecting the idea.

“It never went as we expected, but we, the government, still hold the same stand. We request you members of parliament, as parents, to tell your councils on ways to solve this problem,” she said.

In he basic question, Lyimo had wanted to know government plans  to support women.

The minister said many women had not received enough opportunities to further their education in some communities.

Simba said  following the situation her ministry in collaboration with other stakeholders had been encouraging communities to fight against oppressive traditions, which are the major hindrance of women development.

Regarding education, Simba said the government had made strides in encouraging all children to attend school.

“We opened primary and secondary schools in most villages to enable children to have access to education closer to their homes,” said the minister.
