The Tanzania Posts Corporation (TPC) board has been ordered to present review of workers’ annual performance to the government in a move to bolster efficiency and earnings.
The directive was issued in Dar es Salaam on Monday by Minister for Communications, Science and Technology Prof Makame Mbarawa, before he launched the new TPC board of directors.
Appointed board members are Dr Yamungu Kayandabila (chairperson), Khadija Omar (vice chairperson), Idrisa Killangi, Rukia Shamte, Prof Nicholaus Bangu, Samuel Marwa and Ussi Hussein.
He said the move would help improve the corporation’s performance and increase its earnings.
Prof Mbarawa said the government wants to see its investment in the corporation is realised within a short period from now.
“Many Tanzanians depend on this corporation for its contribution to development. You have to increase performance and I will demand the board to present to me yearly management and workers’ performance.
He said Tanzanians are now fed up with words, hence they need to see good performance that can change their livelihood.
“We will not hesitate to take stern measures against any worker or management who will not carry out their duties well,” he stated.
He affirmed that the government would continue to support the corporation to meet its targets.
Minister Mbarawa also insisted that the government has been implementing various plans aimed at increasing efficiency.
Explaining, he said more efforts were directed to the implementation of the national postal policy to make it play a crucial role in communications.
He also said the government has started to implement the post codes and addresses system in some parts of Dodoma and Arusha regions.
When completed the systems would help to simplify the provision of various social services and increase revenue.
He said that an inadequate addresses system would make it difficult to identify and trace location of businesses which are potential taxpayers.
“We are losing a lot of revenue due to lack of proper postal codes and address system. The project for the new address system and postal codes is crucial in this regard,” he said.
According to him, TCRA has already started the process of creating a new address data base system.
The database will be integrated with the geographical information system. It will also enable quick retrieval, update, process and analysis of address data through a web-based application.
Speaking earlier, the TPC board vice chairperson Khadija Omar, said they understand that there are many challenges facing the corporation.
“We will work on all challenges as per your directives in order to improve the performance of this corporation,” she said.
