Gongo la mboto and Tabata residents rank high for illegal connections of electricity and non-payment of power bills in Ilala Region, the region’s Manager for Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (Tanesco) and Engineer Athanasius Nangali said yesterday.

Nangali revealed this to the media at Kivule in Dar es Salaam after his region launched a four-day operation to disconnect power from users who made illegal connections.

The exercise affected power consumers who bypassed Tanesco meters and those with big electricity bills. Ilala Tanesco region covers Tabata, Industrial Area, City Centre and Gongo la Mboto.

Nangali said many people have been using power illegally through the use of unauthorised electricians, popularly known in Kiswahili as Vishoka, who have been rampant in the area, passing power against the meters.

Many power consumers in the area have accumulated huge amounts of unpaid bills, which one reason contributing to Tanesco losing 10 percent of its revenue, said Nangali, attributing the situation to unfaithful workers. “We have a big problem in our region …many of our customers do have electricity connected illegally, others bypass meters while others do have huge unpaid bills,” he said.
