Open University of Tanzania (OUT) Chancellor, John Malecela has defended the education standard provided by the university saying it met all required standards.

He made the remarks in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday when opening the 20th anniversary celebration of OUT and took the opportunity to rebut the institution’s critics.

Malecela sees the university, in his words, as the savior of the poor who lacked the opportunity to join the few universities otherwise available in the country.

The former Vice president and Prime minister of the nation, said, since its establishment in 1992, OUT has opened branches and created employment in numerous regions. He emphasised the importance of distance learning saying many students have benefited thanks to the university’s improved Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Open University of Tanzania, according to statistics from the Tanzania Commission of Universities (TCU) is the leading university in number of yearly enrollments compared to any other higher learning institutions in the nation.

OUT Vice Chancellor Prof Tolly Mbwette, said that already the university has branches throughout East Africa and has already established its offices in Kenya, Rwanda and Namibia.

Chairman of the University Council, Prof Samuel Wangwe, called on the university administration to exercise exemplary leadership by performing in accordance to the laid down laws and regulations that guide the university.

“We don’t need unnecessary barriers that that will bring problems to the university’s prosperity…” Wangwe admonished the administrators.

The OUT anniversarycommenced on 30th July through October climaxing on the 27th accompanied by the universities 24th graduation ceremonies to be held in Bungo Kibaha.
