The newly elected Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) squash section captain Akil Hirji has pledged to work in close cooperation with the National Sports Council (NSC).

He said he will do everything possible to make sure that the game’s tentacles are spread beyond the DGC with a view of having national outlook.

He started with refurbishment of the DGC squash courts ahead of organising tournaments at the facility.

Plans are underway to stage tournaments earmarked for young players and also invite international squash players to some of the events at DGC.

“I will try to talk to National Sports Council to see how best we can do to develop the game to all parts of the country,” he said.

He expects to organise three tournaments at the facility before the end of this year as discussions are underway with potential sponsors.

Hirji has replaced Deepak Doshi as Ali Rehemtulla has become his vice-captain. Other officials heading the squash section include Mo Khimji (secretary), Dilesh Manji (Treasurer) and Marwa Busigara and Henry Herman as section members.

The squash captain described his committee members as hardworking and dedicated to the improvement of the game at DGC and beyond.

Squash is one of the games which are being played on recreational basis as it lacks a national body to coordinate events.
