League lacks competitiveness, says Julio

Simba SC assistant coach Jamhuri Kihwelu ‘Julio’ says the ongoing Mainland Premier League lacks competitiveness.

Kihwelu made the statement when he spoke to the press yesterday about his team’s preparation for their premier league match against JKT Ruvu set for tomorrow at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
He said the league lacked competitiveness because the top three places on the 14-team league had been dominated by regular top clubs – Yanga, Azam FC and Simba SC.
He said that mediocre performance of the remaining teams was caused by financial drawbacks and lack of sponsorships.
He said that the top three teams have been performing well because they have extra sponsors apart from the main sponsor, Vodacom Tanzania.
Apart from the league sponsor, Yanga and Simba are sponsored by Tanzania Breweries Limited through the Kilimanjaro brand while Azam FC are part of the Azam Group of companies.
He said lack of finance was causing deteriorating performance of various teams in the league.
Kihwelu said that the three teams will keep dominating the league if the remaining 11 teams will not be supported.
The coach whose team’s trip to Oman was recently sponsored by Rahma al-Kharusi, said sponsorship increases the quality of the teams and the league.
Other teams in the league are Coastal Union, Mtibwa Sugar, Kagera Sugar, African Lyon, JKT Ruvu, Ruvu Shooting Stars, Toto African, Police Morogoro, Mgambo Shooting, Prison FC and JKT Oljoro.
The league is currently led by Yanga with 32 points, Azam (30) and Simba (26).
