The government has asked local commercial banks to bolster their service delivery and reduce the incontinences they cause to customers so as to lure more customers.
This was said yesterday in Dar es Salaam by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Investment and empowerment) Dr Mary Nagu, at the launch of Akiba Commercial Bank (ACB’s) mobile and relocation of its Kijitonyama branch in dare s Salaam.
She said the number of Tanzanians who access banking services remains small, hence there was a need for financial institutions to change the situation. At the moment it is estimated that less than12 percent of Tanzanians have access to banking services
According to her the percentage could be raised through public education, reduction of banking costs such as interest rates and increased loans.
“We have to make sure that more people access these services for the improvement of their livelihood and country’s economy,” she said.
Dr Nagu said the government will continue to support the banking sector to make it grow more and increase its coverage.
She said most of the banks operate in urban areas, hence there was a need for the instituions to extend their activities in rural areas.
“I urge ACB to open more branches in the Mainland, particularly in regions where agriculture is dominant like Manyara, where farmers need such services,” he said.
Dr Nagu, also urged the bank to make sure that the new mobile service is made affordable and it does not inconvenience the customers.
“These services should be cheap and available at any time whenever needed by customers, she added
For his part, the ACB Managing Director, John Lwande, said the services has been designated specifically for easy access to one’s account in facilitating payments of utility bills such as Luku, DSTV and Dawasco, money transfer from one account to another and mobile phone top ups.
He said the services to be available at home or office would reduce costs incurred by customers and delays experienced earlier.
Lwande urged the bank's customers to register for the services which are available in all ACB branches located in Dar es Salaam, Moshi and Arusha regions.
