Mobile network provider Tigo has donated nine more wheelchairs to Association of People Living with Disabilities in Dodoma, as part of its continuing partnership with the Association of Entrepreneurs Living with Disability.
A statement issued by the firm at the weekend said the donation is part of a joint effort to improve the quality of life for citizens with disabilities by creating opportunities for them to start their own businesses.
“We believe that access to mobility, work flexibility and financial stability is a vital part of this journey,” said Fadhila Saidi, Regional Manager of Tigo, Dodoma.
“This is an important initiative for us, as it speaks directly to our commitment to help improve the lives and well-being of people,” she said.
The handover ceremony for the donation was held on Saturday at the municipal council, and the wheelchairs were presented on behalf of Tigo by Fadhila Saidi.
Receiving the tricycles on behalf of the association of people living with disability (Chawata), Dodoma Mayor Emmanuel Mwiliko said:
“We would like to create a world where people living with disabilities can be economically empowered.”
He added: “This will not only increase their confidence, but will also transform them into actively performing members of society who contribute to the economy of the country.”
Through the entrepreneurial training programmme, Tigo has provided members of the association with handsets, SIM cards and training on Tigo services, Tigo Pesa and Tigo Rusha, the statement said.
This will help create vast business opportunities for them and improve their income generating capabilities, it added.
This is the second round of donations made by the phone firm this month. In the first round it donated 26 wheelchairs in Dar es Salaam. Another 15 will be donated in Arusha next weekend, it said.
Started in 1994, Tigo is the first cellular network in Tanzania and is part of Millicom International Cellular S.A (MIC) and provides services to more than 30 million customers in 13 emerging markets in Africa and Latin America.
