Mashujaa Band and Mashauzi Classic will perform at this year’s Miss Tabata beauty contest set for June 1 at Da’ West Park, Tabata on the western outskirts of the city.

The coordinator of the event, Godfrey Kalinga, said yesterday that organisers had decided to bring the two bands to perform because the duo had different music tastes.

Mashauzi Classic led by Isha Mashauzi is a taarab group while Mashujaa is the current top band in the country’s pop music bands.

“We want fans to feel tastes of different types of music at Miss Tabata and that is why we decided to invite different entertainers to thrill the contestants and the fans,” Kalinga said, noting that the contest will be used to mark 10 years of the pageant.

He said 18 aspirants were undergoing rehearsals at Da West Park. They are Neema Saleh (18), Noella Michael (19), Queen Issa (20), Hycalisa Joseph (18), Phillios Lemi (19), Wikllihemina Mvungi (20) and Lightness Rajab (19).

Others are Suzanne Pancras Kato (19), Caroline David (21), Khadija Nurdin (19), Jamila Omary (18), Advent Mamkwe (21), Nadya Marjeby (21), Axer Peter (20), Rahama Hassan (19), Mercy Mlay (21) and Diana Simon Laizer (20).

Ten contestants from the pageant will be picked to represent Tabata at Miss Ilala which will also attract aspirants from Miss Dar City Centre and Miss Ukonga before vying for Redds Miss Tanzania.

Faiza Ally is the reigning Miss Tabata, whereas Miss Tabata winners have often performed well at the Miss Tanzania contest, with Miss Tabata 2010 Consolata Lukosi   emerging Miss Tanzania second runner-up before clinching the Miss Redds Ambassador title. Julliet William who also came from Tabata finished third at Miss Tanzania in 2010.
